Nature uses enzymes as the catalyst to accelerate reactions in biology. It is estimated that about one-third of enzymes in nature require metal ions to perform their function. We are interested in gaining a fundamental understanding of molecular processes underpinning the role of the protein environment in modulating the intrinsic reactivity of transition metals in enzymes that can be utilized in future diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
